Become a childcare worker – even on a part-time basis

Would you like to complete a state-certified childcare worker apprenticeship whilst still having enough time for your family, a part-time job or other commitments? If so, the part-time apprenticeship could be just the thing for you.

The apprenticeship lasts three academic years, which is one year longer than the full-time option. In return, you’ll benefit from a more flexible timetable and greater freedom in your day-to-day life.

Your benefits at a glance

  • In the first year of the course, you’ll have lessons four days a week.
  • In the second and third years, you’ll attend school three days a week and complete a fixed work placement day each week.
  • One day of the week is always free – ideal for studying, working or family commitments.
  • Lessons start at 8.45 am and finish by 3.15 pm at the latest.
  • During the holidays, there are no lessons or work placements.
  • The course content is taught in smaller modules, so that you are prepared for practical work step by step.
  • The work placement starts later, so that you can first acquire important theoretical foundations.
  • With a nine-month probationary period, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know the training programme and settle in.

What to expect from the training programme

The training programme combines theory and practice. The timetable includes subjects such as pedagogy, psychology, German, English, mathematics, politics, law, PE, as well as practical training and infant care.

Entry requirements

To be admitted, you will need:

  • A successful secondary school leaving certificate (a grade 3 in German is desirable)
  • Good health suitable for the profession
  • A placement for the training programme

Important information

Foreign school qualifications must be recognised by the Qualifications Recognition Office in Gunzenhausen.

If German is not your first language, you will need to provide evidence of German language proficiency at B2 level, for example from Telc, the Goethe-Institut or the German Language Diploma.
