They read or study with schoolchildren, accompany refugees on visits to government offices or distribute food to those in need – volunteers are a vital pillar of our society. Just under half of the population in Aux dedicates their free time to helping others. “People find that working for the community gives their lives meaning,” explains Alexander Smienk, deputy director of the Augsburg Volunteer Centre (FZA) (in German).

The FZA sees itself as a hub for civic engagement and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2022. It addresses current issues facing urban society and connects volunteers with charitable projects. This ensures that everyone can get involved: “We also receive enquiries from companies that would like to get involved in social or environmental causes,” explains Smienk. “During a joint trip to the zoo, we can bring company employees together with people with disabilities – in other words, groups that would otherwise have no point of contact. They learn from one another and new friendships are formed.”

In Aux, everyone pitches in

More than 2,000 people in Augsburg are registered as volunteers. They step in when individuals, organisations or clubs need a helping hand. Whether on a regular basis or on an ad hoc basis – that is, popping in from time to time where short-term assistance is required – they help with shopping, at summer or children’s festivals, or accompany people with disabilities on outings. “Volunteering is a great way to get started in a new city,” Smienk explains. “Those who volunteer not only find a meaningful activity, but also make friends straight away.”

You can get involved at any age: there are litter-picking campaigns in the woods, community projects for schoolchildren, or SymPaten volunteers who welcome people at major events in the city. “Our latest project is ‘LeihLa’,” reports Smienk, an early adopter of cargo bikes, enthusiastically. LeihLa is a loaner cargo bike that people and organisations working for the common good can use free of charge for transport. After a brief briefing, it can be used to stock information stands, rescue food or carry out removals.

'mitanand & füranand'

There are many volunteers and numerous aid projects in Aux. Stefanie Siegling set up the volunteer agency mitanand & füranand in the Aichach-Friedberg district. Together with her team, she coordinates enquiries and organises projects. “We now know potential contacts in every municipality in our district,” says Siegling. “If someone from Bachern needs help, we know who to ask.” This creates a personal touch, even though there are sometimes long distances to cover within the district. In addition, practical support and advisory services are offered to local clubs and associations.

Volunteers in the district are deployed, for example, as language and cultural mentors who accompany migrants on visits to government offices. “These mentors have a migrant background themselves. They not only translate linguistically but also help to bridge cultural differences. They receive special training for this,” explains Siegling. This helps newly arrived refugees and contributes to successful integration.

Commitment that brings people together

At the Friedberg Community Network (in German), dedicated volunteers work to foster a vibrant sense of community – whether through communal lunches, in the café, in singing groups or on day trips. The Caritas Association for the Aichach-Friedberg District (e.V.) runs the project, which brings people together and creates spaces for social interaction.
In this video, we visit two people who bring this to life: Sanjay Bhatti and Annette Klein.
